Tragedy on the Mahi River: Gambhira Bridge Collapse

July 10, 2025
Gambhira Bridge (Concrete), Padra taluka, Vadodara district, Gujarat

At around 7:30 AM, a 10–15 m concrete slab section of the 1985 Gambhira Bridge catastrophically failed over the Mahi River. Several vehicles—two trucks, a Bolero jeep, a van, and a motorbike—plunged into the river, resulting in widespread devastation

Casualties & Ongoing Rescue

  • Death toll has climbed to 18, with two still missing.

  • Multiple rescue teams, including NDRF and local fire brigades, continue recovery amid 10+ ft of silted mud that hampers efforts.

  • One survivor, Sonal Padhiyar, recounted how her van plunged and tragically took the lives of her husband and two children.

Flagged for Over Three Years: Concrete Concerns Ignored

Local authorities and residents had raised red flags since 2021, citing:

  • "Unusual vibrations" through the concrete slabs, making the bridge feel unsafe under regular traffic.

  • A 2022 audio from an R&B officer discussing the bridge being “structurally unsound”.

  • Formal letters from the district panchayat urging closure and rebuilding—ignored until disaster struck.

Despite routine slab-level repairs in 2023 and bearing coat maintenance in early 2025, no deep structural intervention was undertaken.

Why the Concrete Failed: Structural Insights

  • Aging infrastructure: The concrete bridge, built in 1985, was over 40 years old—well past its prime without major reinforcement .

  • Skimped structural integrity: Attention was given only to surface-level patchwork—not critical reinforcement of concrete decks, piers, or bearings .

  • Design over sighted: Though inspection protocols were instituted post-2014 and ramped up after the 2022 Morbi tragedy, many reforms—like stronger, corrosion-resistant concrete and fewer expansion joints—weren’t strictly enforced.

Official Response & Accountability

  • Swift suspensions: Four R&B engineers (EE, 2 DEEs, Asst. Engr.) were immediately suspended by CM Bhupendra Patel.

  • Formal investigations: Teams from R&B and private engineering consultants have been dispatched to investigate failure mechanisms.

  • Bridge replacement plan: A new, sturdier concrete bridge—budgeted at ₹212 cr—is already out for tender, approved in late 2024.

  • Victim relief: PM announced ₹2 lakh ex-gratia per deceased family, ₹50,000 per injured; CM added ₹4 lakh to kin.

Broader Implications: Concrete’s Double-Edged Role

  1. Concrete's longevity myth
Despite its reputation, concrete degrades—especially when not reinforced or inspected. Aging reinforced-concrete can develop cracks and honeycombs deep inside, weakening slabs unseen on the surface.

  2. Inspection is more than visual
Surface patches and bearing coat fixes aren’t enough. Structural elements—expansion joints, reinforcement bars, bearings—must be fully assessed, stress-tested, and replaced when needed.

  3. The need for modern standards
Post-2024 bridge norms in Gujarat mandate higher-grade concrete (M‑40 replacing M‑30) and corrosion-resistant steel. If these had been applied to Gambhira earlier, collapse might’ve been averted.
